“This exhibition of oil paintings, my first-ever solo effort, presents a 12-year retrospective of works I consider the highlights of my studio practice. With the title, “Painting a Path to Now”, I have chosen to make this exhibit about the creative journey of an adult student of art, whose paintings visually explore beauty in nature and the vibrant colors of the world around her.
From the onset, painting in a representational style was, for me, what came naturally, as I aspired to honor the beauty of nature as realistically as I was able. However, the prospect of making creative choices outside the parameters of reality attracted my interest, as did other means of achieving more expressive qualities in my paintings. Allowing something more spontaneous to occur as I paint is a concept that appeals to my sense of adventure and has become a valued source of continued inspiration.
Well-represented in this retrospective is my love of flowers and animals, as well as my admiration for still life paintings. A variety of equally colorful landscapes and figurative paintings are included, as are examples of reinterpreted works derived from modernist painters, Alfred Henry Maurer and Ben Benn (née Rosenberg).
I am deeply grateful for this first-time opportunity to publicly exhibit my paintings and thank St. Catherine’s School, as well as Diego Sanchez, for the invitation to do so. I consider the Rennolds Gallery in Turner Hall a wonderfully intimate setting that perfectly complements my retrospective. As a native Virginian, I couldn’t be more proud of reaching this point in my journey as a visual artist, here at home in Richmond, where the energy and inspiration encouraging creative pursuits is just the very best!”
